Western Indians considered puppies a delicacy. It was a big honor to serve guests boiled puppy for supper.

Currently, I'm reading J.J. Audubon's journal of his 1843 expedition to Yellowstone. He painted a portrait of a man and his Indian wife. To reward him for doing the painting, they honored him with a dinner of puppy. He didn't want to insult them, so he decided he would eat one bite which he expected to find repugnant. He was "astonished" to find that it tasted as good as any other meat he ever had. Many of the old trappers preferred it to any other meat as well--better than buffalo or venison.

If I needed meat, I could kill some kinds of animals, but I can't imagine being able to kill a puppy.

She told me that she would have loved him if he had had a tail but the guy she bought him from has a Polish wife so once the female was pregnant they took her to Poland so that the puppies could get their tails docked..

Whats the point of a country passing animal protection laws if people just bypass them all the time?
Who or what do they protect?

My Dog Oliver, was acting very strange one day. He was weak, and looked feverish. He is usually very active and quite the guard dog, cheerful and playful. He is an outside dog, but I brought him in my room to take care of him. I tried to give him nice cold water and even beef jerky as a treat and he couldn't eat it or chew. I saw that the right side of his head was abnormally swollen, mainly around the jaw. We took him to the emergency vet, and they kept him a few days and took blood samples and were able to open his jaw to see if he had a tooth abscess and they took xrays also. He was given antibiotics and steroids. They said they couldn't find any cause or problem, and was very frustrating for us because not only was that visit and procedures over $1,000 the swelling is now returning. The swelling did go down while he was on steroids. He is eating and running about normally. On the side of his jaw where the swelling is there is a lump on top under the skin that is soft, but the actual jaw muscle both lower and upper towards the top of his head is much larger that the other side. The emergency vet suggested an MRI if it continues, and I'm really scared he has cancer or a tumor. I have been doing some research online and the closest thing I found was craniomandibular osteopathy, but it says that that is mainly in new born dogs. Im really worried and not sure what to do next.

I'm so frustrated, I feel like an awful mom because I can't find something he want to eat anymore.
:( I felt the mass yesterday when I picked him up, it feels larger now. I will be surprised if he makes it through the end of the year at the rate he's going now.

I am new to this forum and want to say how grateful I am that it is here. First off, I am going to be posting this question in both the dogs and the cats areas, since it applies to both and I would like to hear from as many people as possible.
Here's the scoop: I live in a really small trailer (one bedroom, teensy bathroom and living area/kitchen) with my husband and our three dogs, all three are 2-3 years old. We also have six cats who live separately from us in my mother's home (which is about 200 feet from our trailer). We are in the process of saving up to build a home (that goal is about three years out). In the meantime, I miss my cats terribly. The cats have never met the dogs.
Before anyone even suggests it, I need to say that I am not going to let loose of any of these animals any time soon. They are healthy (vet checked yearly for the young ones and twice for the elders), flea-medicined and get the shots they need. I am not a hoarder. I have no desire to get any more animals of any kind. These animals just sort of "fell into my lap" through circumstances, not necessarily beyond my control but certainly beyond my capability to resist. Some of the cats and dogs have personality issues we are working to correct. There are NO available homes for older cats and dogs in our area. We have high unemployment, and people are shedding animals faster than the shelter can keep up, so I will not consider trying to adopt these animals out.

So ... back to the question. After a yearlong quest, I have finally made my husband commit to building me an attached outdoor enclosure and indoor enclosure (heated and everything) for the cats that will be attached to our trailer.
I know that there will be a new learning curve for the cats and dogs when they are finally in their new home. I do not expect miracles. I would like to find out the best way to introduce the cats and the dogs, though.

I have considered crate-training the dogs over the winter to help this process along, but I would like both species to be able to interact when my husband and I are at home in the evening.

Does anyone have suggestions on this? I know that I will need to keep the cats and dogs separated for a time (luckily, we can lock our bedroom off from the dogs and I can put a litter box in our dried-off shower during the day).

Would it be best to introduce the cats one at a time into this scenario?

I am also going to take the dogs to obedience classes starting in January. Right now, they react terribly to my sister's outdoor cats, and I know that I need to gain trust and control of them before I can even consider bringing our cats into the mix.

Any constructive suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks!

I have been dealing with this issue for four months now. She does it more often when he is gone or on business trips. She has gone to the vet & they say health wise she is fine, just a little too healthy. I hate coming home now since I know what I am coming home to- ANOTHER mess. He has had her for 10 years. Is she acting out? Is she marking the area? I have two dogs, he had two cats. They all seem to get along since they've moved in. I'm about ready to make her an outside cat or have him get rid of her- which is so hard to do since she is family to him. I'm so frustrated. Any suggestions?

The cat who used to cuddle with me all night is sleeping with my grand daughter, I'm wondering if we will have the same cats we started with when they get their own house?
The dogs seem to have the biggest problem adjusting, Heinz was great with the cats that preceded him but spent a couple weeks snapping at the new ones. Thenn he started to pee on the floor in front of the kids room, and even on a kid sleeping on the floor. Lucy just loves the extra attention, I don't know what his problem is.
